Lexus NX: Precaution

PRECAUTION

PRECAUTIONS FOR FRONT CAMERA SYSTEM

(a) Characteristics of forward recognition camera

(1) The forward recognition camera has characteristics similar to human eyes. In conditions where the front is hard to see for the driver, the forward recognition camera will similarly have difficulties recognizing the lane and pedestrians, vehicles or obstacles in front.

(2) Recognition of objects is limited to the field of view of the forward recognition camera.

(3) Although the forward recognition camera is equipped with a function to determine front surface dirt automatically, it is not perfect.

HINT:

In certain situations, it may not be able to determine dirt in front of the forward recognition camera.

(b) Vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, lanes, etc. may be difficult to recognize or may not be recognized in the following environmental conditions.

(1) When the front visual field is poor due to bad weather (rain, snow, fog, blowing dust, sand, snowstorm, etc.)

(2) When water, snow or dust is kicked up by a nearby vehicle, or when visibility is poor due to water vapor, sand, smoke, etc.

(3) When subjected to strong light from the front, such as strong sunlight or high beam from an oncoming vehicle

(4) In insufficiently bright environments, such as driving at night or in a tunnel

(5) When the headlights on this vehicle are not illuminated even at night or while driving in a tunnel

(6) When a surrounding surface is a single color (such as snowy landscape) and there is not enough contrast

(7) When the road grade changes suddenly (a sudden upward or downward slope)

(8) When there is a sudden change in brightness such as at the entrance and exit of tunnels and under shades

(9) When using the heater in foot mode during cold weather

HINT:

This may cause the upper part of the windshield glass to fog up and the camera may not work properly.

(10) When surroundings are dim (dawn, dusk, etc.)

(c) Detection may be inadequately performed in the following situations.

(1) When overloading

(2) When the vehicle height has changed, such as when the suspension is modified or the tire size is changed

(3) When there is snow, ice, dirt, frost, dust or oil film sticking to the windshield glass

(4) When the windshield glass fogs up

(5) When target recognition is imperfect due to the obstruction of the forward recognition camera visual field by raindrops, water drops from the washer, or front wiper blade

(6) An object mounted (such as a canoe, etc.) on the roof carrier is obstructing the area in front of the forward recognition camera

(7) When dirt, ice and snow or mud is adhering to the headlights

HINT:

The target may not be illuminated properly, and it may not be recognized.

(8) When the optical axis of the headlight is deviated

HINT:

The target may not be illuminated properly, and it may not be recognized.

(9) When the headlights, fog lights or other lights have been modified

(d) Since there is a limit to the performance of the forward recognition camera, it may not be able to detect in the following conditions.

(1) When the forward recognition camera was subjected to an impact and deviation or distortion has occurred

(2) When the temperature is high inside the vehicle, such as after leaving the vehicle in blazing heat

(3) When the temperature is low inside the vehicle, such as after leaving the vehicle in an intensely cold environment

(4) Immediately after starting the hybrid system

PRECAUTION FOR TROUBLESHOOTING

(a) If the malfunction is due to connectors being loosely connected, or improper installation of parts, reconnecting the connectors or removing and reinstalling the parts may temporarily or completely correct the problem.

(b) In order to determine the malfunctioning area, use DTC output and other data to check vehicle conditions at the time of the malfunction and write down the data before disconnecting connectors or removing/installing parts.

(c) Be sure to check and record all current and past DTCs output due to malfunctions in other systems as the front camera system may be affected by these malfunctions.

PRECAUTION FOR HANDLING VEHICLE

(a) When running in the chassis dynamometer, cover the front of the forward recognition camera so that it cannot take images.

NOTICE:

When "Front Camera Unavailable See Owner's Manual" is displayed in the multi-information display, complete work and then clear the following system vehicle control history entries.

HINT:

  • The forward recognition camera has a function for learning the travel direction of the vehicle based on images taken while driving. When the forward recognition camera takes images that are different from actual driving conditions such as those when running in the chassis dynamometer, this may result in erroneous learning of the forward recognition camera.
  • Covering the front of the forward recognition camera may cause "Front camera temporarily unavailable, remove dirt or fogging from glass" to be displayed in the multi-information display after some time. However, the display will disappear when the camera is returned to its original state.

HANDLING PRECAUTION

(a) Unless otherwise specified in the procedure, turn the power switch is off before removing or installing ECUs and sensors.

(b) After the removal and installation of an ECU or sensor, check that no DTCs are output.

(c) Observe all the following precautions when handling the forward recognition camera since it is a precision instrument.

(1) Do not subject the forward recognition camera to a strong impact or force.

(2) Do not disassemble the forward recognition camera.

(3) Do not change the installation position of the forward recognition camera or modify surrounding parts.

(4) When replacing the forward recognition camera, etc., do not touch the lens area

HINT:

If the lens area of the forward recognition camera is touched, replace the forward recognition camera with a new one.

REPLACEMENT PRECAUTIONS

(a) When replacing the forward recognition camera

(1) When the forward recognition camera is replaced with a new one or the windshield glass is replaced or removed/installed, make sure to perform beam axis adjustment for the forward recognition camera and clear the vehicle control history for each system.

HINT:

Forward recognition camera adjustment can be performed by using either "One Time Recognition" or "Sequential Recognition".

One Time Recognition:

(2) If a device that was installed in another vehicle is used, the information stored in the forward recognition camera will not match the information from the vehicle, and may cause a DTC to be output.

(3) Do not dirty or damage the lens when replacing the forward recognition camera.

(4) Do not use a forward recognition camera if it has been dropped or subjected to any strong impact.

(b) When replacing the windshield glass

(1) When replacing the windshield glass equipped with the forward recognition camera, be sure to replace it with a genuine windshield glass for the forward recognition camera. A windshield glass other than a genuine windshield glass for the forward recognition camera does not have a camera installation bracket. Therefore, the forward recognition camera cannot be installed. If the forward recognition camera is mounted on a windshield glass that is not a genuine windshield glass for the forward recognition camera, the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate properly because of the transmittance of the windshield glass and the shape of black ceramic parts.

PRECAUTION FOR SURROUNDING PARTS OF FORWARD RECOGNITION CAMERA

(a) Do not install a front wiper blade other than a genuine part.

HINT:

This may affect the visual field of the forward recognition camera and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(b) Replace the wiper rubber early.

HINT:

The forward recognition camera may not be able to recognize images in a stable manner if the wiper wipes inadequately, and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(c) Do not install accessories on the front of the vehicle, such as on top of the hood or grille.

HINT:

This may affect the visual field of the forward recognition camera and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(d) Do not let baggage loaded on the roof of the vehicle get into the visual field range of the forward recognition camera.

HINT:

This may affect the visual field of the forward recognition camera and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(e) Always keep the windshield glass clean.

HINT:

The forward recognition camera may not be able to recognize images in a stable manner if the windshield glass is dirty, oily or fogs up, and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(f) Do not attach stickers or install accessories on the windshield glass in front of the forward recognition camera.

HINT:

  • If you have to install, make sure it does not overlap on the front surface of the forward recognition camera.
  • This may affect the visual field of the forward recognition camera and all the systems using the forward recognition camera may not operate normally.

(g) Wiping with the wiper is necessary if there are drops of water sticking to the front of the forward recognition camera even if the windshield glass has water-repellent glass coating.

(h) Replace the windshield glass if the windshield glass is damaged, cracked, etc.
